Joan was very dear to me. We had in common going to school later in life and then carving out a career. Mine was journalism so that fit. We were each other's confidante. The last time I saw her she was staying with Carol White in Mayville, NY. A few years before that while sitting on a bench in Chautauqua, NY, she confided to me that she was losing her memory. She was very happy with the living arrangements in PA. She was so proud of her daughter, loved her grandson, and praised her son-in-law to the heavens. She spoke with great affection of her son and admired his free spirit.
