Ltc. Col. <ret.> Severin J. Szczecinski, 86, of Nanticoke, Pa. and West Conshohocken, Pa. passed away Thursday, November 7, 2019 at his home in West Conshohocken, Pa. surrounded by his family and beloved German Shorthaired Pointer, Juneau.
He is the husband of Elizabeth Tressa (Hudson) Szczecinski.
Survivors include wife Elizabeth Tressa Szczecinski of W. Conshohocken, son David J. Szczecinski of W. Conshohocken, and daughter Christine T. (& William) Lane of Doylestown, Pa.
Severin was born in Nanticoke on January 9, 1933, to the late Joseph D., a coal miner and the late Sophia Philomena (Sulewski ) Szczecinski, a seamstress. Severin or Ski as he was usually known as, grew up in Nanticoke but became a traveler not only of the United States but of the world. Ski joined the Army Reserve after high school and was stationed in Germany. Upon returning to the US he enrolled and graduated from Saint Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, Philadelphia in 1959. He then graduated from the Montgomery Hospital School of Anesthesia, Norristown, Pa. in 1960. In 1963 now married to Elizabeth, he entered the US Army as a CRNA and started a journey that would take him to Thailand and with his family to Japan. Ski and family were also stationed in a few of our fifty states, Fort Wainwright Fairbanks Alaska, Fort Sam Huston Texas, Fort Knox Kentucky, Valley Forge and the Army War College in Carlisle Pennsylvania, Walter Reed Army Medical Center in D.C., and Fort Dix New Jersey. During his service in the US Army he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation 2nd Award, Army Commendation Medal and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal.
After serving in the military, Ski’s home base since 1978 has been West Conshohocken. He continued to practice as a CRNA in a few Delaware Valley Hospitals before his retirement in 1993. Retirement allowed more time to spend with his family and his passions, which were numerous, hunting and fishing atop the list. As an upstate Pennsylvania boy he fished as well as hunted both small and big game. Hunting trips took him to Wyoming, Montana, New York and Kodiak Island, Alaska, with the trophies still on display at his home base. Ski took yearly trips to Alaska to fish for salmon of course, Halibut and any other game fish. He also visited Hawaii every winter with his wife for the warmth, fishing, walking the beach for sea shells and whale watching from the lanai. Ski could also be spotted fishing in Rhode Island, Canada, Lake Ontario, Maine and also off the New Jersey coast.
Ski touched a lot of people, both through his work in the Army and in civilian life as well as during his travels for work and pleasure. He stuck up conversations with just about everyone he met and always seemed to have something in common. He loved to tell stories about his travels, areas visited or lived and also about the people he had met. Ski has had lifelong friendships with many. He will be missed by family and countless friends across the United States.
His service and interment will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Disabled American Veterans, 3725 Alexandria Pike, Cold Springs, KY 41076.
