Obituary of Edward J. Whelan
Edward Joseph Whelan, age 94, of Blue Bell, PA passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family Monday January 22, 2024. He was blessed with a full and wonderful life.
Born in Chestnut Hill in 1929 to Loretta and John Whelan, he grew up in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia. Ed was raised and lived his life as a devoted Catholic. He attended Holy Cross Catholic Grade School and LaSalle College High School (class of '47) before working his way through LaSalle University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in business. Later he worked towards a master’s degree from Drexel University. Ed proudly served his country during the Korean War as a Second Lieutenant in the Artillery for the Army. After serving, he worked for several years at the Philadelphia Navy Yard before beginning a successful career with Wyeth Pharmaceutical Company, where he worked as a Systems Analyst for nearly 40 years and met his bride.
Residing in Blue Bell since 1972, he was a dedicated parishioner of St. Helena’s Church, a devoted family man, and a loyal friend. Ed took interest in all people, and everyone who knew him felt the warmth of his smile and big heart. He never forgot a name and amazed people with his memory and ability to recall and tell stories. He was an avid reader, history buff and Phillies fan. He loved keeping in touch with old friends dating back to his grade school days, and rarely missed attending LaSalle High School alumni events, Holy Cross Reunions, Wyeth retiree luncheons or any good reason to gather. Ed enjoyed time at the Delaware shore in retirement years, and he was happiest spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister Mary Terese McShea Sweeney and his brothers Jack, Tommy, and Bill Whelan. He is blessed to reunite in Heaven with his beloved granddaughter, Erin Delia Moore. Ed is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marjorie (McBrearty) Whelan, as well as his five children; Chris, Diane Moore (Casey), Bob, Sharon, and Brendan (Megan). He was adored by his six grandchildren Lila, Paige, Vivian, Kyle, Brynn, and Ryan.
Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:15 AM in the Narthex of St. Helena Church, 1489 Dekalb Pike, Blue Bell, PA. His funeral mass will follow at 10:30 AM at St. Helena Church.
Interment will take place in St. John Neumann Cemetery, Chalfont, PA following the mass.
